Latest Essay Topics
Latest Essay TopicsThe most recent IELTS essay topics reflect a more relaxed and less rigid approach to the subject than before. In fact, this is perhaps the best possible illustration of the fact that a change in trend does not necessarily indicate a change in trend. The reason for this change in attitude is probably very obvious: improved English proficiency for students. We have witnessed a significant rise in the number of students opting for professional English tutoring over the past couple of years. Most of these students come from households where English is a native language; they are coming from families which were never formally educated in English. However, their early formal education in English, while helpful in introducing them to the basics of writing, was never designed to teach them to write clearly and properly. Their informal education, most likely conducted with only short books on grammar and punctuation, was never designed to teach them to communicate clearly and concisely. This explains why many students who are not even native English speakers often find it hard to communicate in English. A result of their early exposure to a non-academic language - their non-academic language, commonly called 'illiterate' - is that they do not automatically understand what is meant by an incorrect word. They need to be taught the different incorrect terms. This is where you can spot an improvement in the overall situation: there has been a noticeable improvement in English teaching in general and not just in professional English tutoring. That is the reason why the curriculum for the English test at the end of the course has become so flexible. Now, students have the choice between two formats of the essay: one requires them to read or listen to a small piece of literature - a short story, a few lines of poetry, an essay, etc - but the other requires them to answer some questions. Both formats are required for passing the exam. The new IELTS essay topics hav e been published with the intention of encouraging this linguistic change. The purpose is to give students a chance to experiment with how to write concisely and persuasively. They can do so either by following the suggestions in the standard format or by applying their own innovative approach to the material. Some of the students who took the essay topics in the original format found them too rigid, while others found them too light. However, both students tended to agree that it is still better than the standard essay topics.
